Prefix Private Registration Plates

Prefix number plates are a popular and eye-catching style of vehicle registration. They were issued between 1983 and 2001, and the prefix indicates the year of registration. The first letter on the plate signifies the year in which the vehicle was registered, followed by a unique combination of numbers and letters. Prefix plates have become highly sought after due to their distinct design and age-related significance. Additionally, they offer personalisation options for drivers looking to add a unique touch to their vehicles.

Suffix Private Plates

Suffix style registration plates were introduced in 1963 and were in use till 1983. The registration plates comprise three letters, one to three numbers, and a final letter indicating the year of registration, starting with "A" for 1963, "B" for 1964, and so on. If you are interested in purchasing a suffix private plate, you can utilise our easy-to-use suffix plate builder that provides instant results at an unbeatable price. Current Style Car Registrations

The existing style of number plates is made up of seven characters. It starts with two letters, followed by a two-digit number and ends with three more letters. These registration plates can still be used to spell out words, for example: DE51 RED. This type of new number plate allows for a much larger number of combinations compared to the previous versions that were available before 2001. However, the letters "I" and "Q" are not allowed, but the letter "Z" can appear as part of the last three characters.

region where the car was first registered, the second two characters are numbers and represent the vehicle’s age. Plates are released in two six-month periods each year. Plates released in the first batch take these characters from the year date, for example for 2019 they are one and nine. The second batch takes the date and adds 50, making these numbers six and nine for 2019. The last three characters are random letters.

There are some limitations on the future registration you can select; some characters aren’t used on the current form of UK plates issued. For example, the letters I, Q and Z can’t be employed as the first two characters on a British plate and I and Q can’t be used for the last three letters either. Q is reserved for number plates to denote vehicles with undetermined age or origin by the DVLA. Kit cars and vehicles that have been modified far beyond their original specifications can have a Q registration. Additionally, number plate combinations that resemble a word or phrase which others may potentially find offensive are always excluded by the DVLA and never issued.

Whether you’re looking to buy a future release number plate for yourself or as a gift for a loved one, such as your son or daughter when they’re old enough to get behind the wheel, at New Reg we can help. Upcoming DVLA Registration Series

There are two number plate series releases every year from the DVLA. The new registration series follow the new registration format, being two characters, the year, and three more characters. The first two characters are the regional identifiers, and the last 3 are random. The first release of the year's two digits are the year itself, for example 2017 would be 17. The second release of the year is the year plus 50, for example: 2017's 2nd number plate series release would be 17 + 50 (67).
